voices of pride

Human Rights Campaign, Washington, D.C., June 4, 2019

Presented by the Latino GLBT History Project. Curated by Alison Lee Schroeder.

Voices can lift us up, encourage us to keep going, and soothe us when we’re in pain. They can call people out. They can call for justice. They can come together and be heard. But voices can also circle in our minds. They can fill us with doubt, and keep us up at night. The voices we hear do not all speak truth, and it is important to listen hard for those that do.

Having a voice is having power. If you have one, you are able to speak for those who don’t. If you find yours, you are able to speak truth.

Voices of Pride brings together work from Latinx artists embracing LGBT pride in a myriad of approaches. Their artwork invites us to consider established ideas concerning appearances, tradition, the body, and belonging, encouraging us to be more attentive and aware of the voices that shape us, and the way we use our own.
